Frequently Asked Questions
Renovation comes with a lot of questions, especially if you haven’t done it before or if you’ve had a mixed experience in the past. This page is here to answer some of the most common things homeowners ask us – about planning, pricing, timelines, and what it’s actually like to work with Schriefer Construction. If you’re wondering how the process works or what to expect before getting started, you’ll likely find helpful clarity here.
Clear communication is part of every project. These frequently asked questions explain how we handle estimates, timelines, permits, and day-to-day work in your home.
Do you offer free estimates?
A ballpark range can be discussed over the phone or by contacting us directly.
Detailed, on-site assessments involve a fee, which is credited toward the project.

Do you handle building permits?
Yes. If your project requires a building permit, electrical permit, plumbing permit, or structural approval, I assist with the process and coordinate with licensed trades and inspectors.
Are you insured?
Yes. Schriefer Construction carries full liability insurance, including WCB, and all required coverage for residential renovation work in Nova Scotia. Documentation can be provided during the estimation process.
What happens in bad weather?
Exterior work pauses if the weather makes it unsafe or poses a risk to the structure. You’ll be notified immediately of any delay.
Interior work generally continues unless weather impacts utilities or material deliveries. Any delays or adjustments to the timeline will be discussed with you immediately

How long will my renovation take?
Timelines vary by project, but you will receive a realistic schedule in your estimate. I prioritize fewer concurrent projects so timelines stay predictable.
How does payment work?
Most projects follow this structure:
- Deposit to secure materials and schedule
- Progress payments during the job
- Final payment once work is complete and inspected
All terms are provided in writing before we begin.
Do I need to move out during work?
Usually no. Most kitchens, bathrooms, and basements can be completed while you remain in the home. I maintain clean work areas, contain dust, and communicate clearly so you can plan around disruptive work. While the project may disrupt your daily routines, every effort is taken to accommodate your lifestyle.
What areas do you serve?
Our work focuses on the North Shore in Nova Scotia, serving homeowners across Colchester, Cumberland, and Pictou Counties, including Tatamagouche, River John, Truro, Pictou, New Glasgow, and surrounding communities.
Do you use subcontractors?
Only licensed, trusted trades such as electricians and plumbers.
All carpentry, layout, finishing, and project management is handled directly by me.
What if you discover hidden issues (rot, wiring, plumbing)?
If something unexpected appears, you’ll be shown the issue immediately, given options, and provided a revised scope and cost before any additional work happens. No surprises, no assumptions.
Can you help with design or material choices?
Yes. I can guide you through practical decisions on layout, materials, fixtures, and finishes. For larger redesigns, I work with designers and engineers as needed.
Can you work within my budget
Yes. We discuss your budget upfront and determine what’s realistic. I’m transparent about where to invest and where you can save without compromising longevity.
When can you start?
Start dates depend on workload and season. I book in advance to keep scheduling predictable and will always give you an honest timeline rather than an optimistic guess.
